The most interesting technological trends

Today, technology is evolving so fast that annual trend forecasts may seem outdated before they are even published. Technological developments allow us to change and progress even faster, causing the pace of change to accelerate until it becomes apparent.

An IT-based career does not change at the same rate, but it does change anyway, and an IT professional familiar with the field will recognize that his / her knowledge needs to be constantly updated.

A 21st century IT worker is constantly learning, if not driven by his own desires, then it is determined by real work-related needs.

What does this mean for us? This means keeping up with technological trends. And that means we have to look to the future all the time to know what skills need to be developed and what kind of jobs we want to learn in depth.

This article, "The Most Interesting Technology Trends", lists eight technology trends that should be explored this year.

1. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence, or AI, has already developed considerably in recent years, but is still on the rise. The influence of artificial intelligence on the way we live, work and play has begun to develop and is now in its infancy. In addition, other Areas of Artificial Intelligence have evolved, including technologies that learn and learn on their own, which we'll talk about a little later.

Artificial intelligence refers more to computer systems designed to mimic human intelligence and perform tasks such as recognizing images, speech, or writing, and making individual decisions. Artificial intelligence can in many cases perform these tasks faster and more accurately than Man, because its functions and activities are predetermined.

Today, almost 80% of people are exposed to Artificial Intelligence services on a daily basis, including navigation apps, streaming services, smartphone assistants, travel and location apps, personal assistants, search engines and smart home devices.

In addition to all this, Artificial Intelligence is used to plan train schedules, analyze business risks, forecast maintenance and improve energy efficiency, all of which, of course, help to save money when working with a large amount of information.

Artificial intelligence is partly what we call automation, and automation is a topical issue today, as there are also concerns about reduced job opportunities. And yet, it is more of a re-profiling, because new jobs will be created involuntarily. Which ones? - such as programming, testing, support and maintenance. One of these professions is also the Architect of Artificial Intelligence. Some who need skilled professionals even say that this position will soon compete with data scientists. 2. Algorithmic learning (machine learning)

Algorithmic learning is one of the fields of Artificial Intelligence. Using Algorithmic Learning, computers are programmed to learn to do something that is not programmed - they learn by discovering models and drawing conclusions from data. In general, we have two types of learning - supervised and unsupervised.

Although Algorithmic learning is a sub-sector of Artificial Intelligence, we have more in this area, including neural networks, natural language processing (NLP), and advanced learning. Each of these industries offers the opportunity to specialize in a career field.

Algorithmic learning is rapidly being introduced into all types of industries, creating a huge demand for skilled professionals. Machine Learning programs are used for data analysis, data acquisition and data model recognition. In the interests of consumers, algorithmic learning provides web search results, real-time advertising, and many other activities, including security.

Despite the fact that all these tools perform a myriad of tasks on our behalf, it creates new jobs. Algorithmic learning jobs rank among the most popular jobs on LinkedIn. And these works are well paid: in 2017, the average salary for an engineer was about 106,225 EUR. Algorithmic learning includes engineers, developers, researchers and data scientists.

3. Automation of robotic processes (RPA)

Like Artificial Intelligence and Algorithmic Learning, Robot Process Automation or RPA is another industry. RPA is the use of software to automate business processes such as application interpretation, transaction processing, data processing, and even answering emails. RPA automates repetitive tasks that people tend to do on a regular basis. These are not just the tasks of a low-paid employee: up to 45% of our activities can be automated, including the work of financial managers, doctors and CEOs.

4. Edge computing - Local data processing

Following technological trends, cloud services have become widespread. The market is, of course, dominated by the biggest and oldest players, such as AWS (Amazon Web Services), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. The adoption of cloud computing continues to grow as more companies migrate to cloud solutions. However, they are no longer the latest technology today.

As the amount of data we process continues to grow, we have become aware of the shortcomings of cloud computing in some situations. Additional tools are needed to work around some of these issues. For example, at high data processing volumes to bypass the slow response time caused by some situations in the cloud computing process when retrieving data from the data center for processing. This shortcoming can be solved if the data processing processes are closer. For this reason, Edge computing or Local data processing can be used to process time-consuming data, or even more so in places where there is a limited Internet connection to a centralized data location. In such situations, Local Data Processing can act as a mini data center.

Such a mini data center can monitor data provision, "caching" of currently needed data (or delivery of frequently used data). In this way, data exchange with Cloud Services is reduced, optimized and Internet traffic is reduced.

The demand for Local Data Processing will continue to grow as the use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices increases and the amount of data processed increases. Therefore, it is important to pay attention when exchanging large amounts of data with cloud services.

5. Virtual reality and augmented reality

Virtual reality (VR) - Virtual reality creates another, separate reality, while Augment Reality (AR) - Augmented reality interacted with existing reality. Although VR has so far been used primarily for games, it is also actively used in training and studies, such as VirtualShip, a ship management simulation software used to train Navy, Army and Coast Guard captains. Of the games, the super-popular Pokemon Go, which could be a good example of AR.

Both VR and AR have huge potential in vocational training, entertainment, education, marketing and even rehabilitation after injuries. It can be used to train doctors to perform surgeries, to offer museum visitors a more in-depth experience, to improve amusement parks or even to improve marketing.

VR market trends show major application developers such as Google, Samsung and Oculus, but many new companies are still emerging and the demand for professionals with VR and AR developer skills will only increase. No special knowledge is required to start working in VR. 6. Cyber security

Cyber security may not seem like something new, given that it has been around for some time, but it is evolving just like other technologies. This is partly because threats are also constantly evolving and tend to evolve with technology. Malicious hackers who try to access data illegally do not plan to quit their jobs so soon, they continue to look for ways to deal with even the toughest security measures. This is partly why new technologies are being adapted to improve security. As long as we have hackers, we will need cyber security that is constantly updated, as it is constantly evolving to defend against these hackers.

As proof of the great need for cyber security professionals, the number of vacancies for cyber security jobs is growing three times faster than the number of vacancies in other areas of technology. The shortage of cyber security professionals is both large and growing very rapidly given the amount of data processed.

7. “Blockchain”

Although most people think that blockchain technology is only related to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and others. However, a blockchain offers security that is useful in many other ways. Simply put, a blockchain can be described as data to which you can only add, not subtract or change. Hence the term 'chain', in this case the data chain. The fact that the previous blocks cannot be changed makes it very secure. In addition, block chains are based on consensus, so no one can take control of the data. With a blockchain, you don't need a trusted third party to monitor or approve transactions.

8. Internet of Things (IoT)

Many "things" are now made using WiFi connections, which means they can connect to the Internet and they can be connected to each other. Thus the Internet of Things or IoT. The Internet of Things is a very important thing for our future, and it has already allowed devices, appliances, cars and much more to be connected to the Internet. We are only in the early stages of IoT development.

As consumers, we already use and benefit from IoT. However, companies now and in the near future have great prospects for development in this sector. IoT can bring better security, efficiency and decision-making to companies when data is collected and analyzed. Such data allows us to plan the expected maintenance of equipment, speed up medical care, improve customer service and offer benefits that we have not even imagined.

However, despite this prosperity in IoT development and adoption, experts say that an insufficient number of IT professionals are trained for IoT work. For someone interested in an IoT career, this means easy entry into a field with a very wide range of opportunities. Skills required include IoT security, knowledge of cloud computing, data analytics, automation, understanding of embedded systems, and knowledge of various devices. After all, it is the Internet of Things and these things are many and varied.

Although technology is emerging, changing and evolving very rapidly, these eight technology trends offer both promising potential now and in the foreseeable future.
